The Greystone Mansion, also known as the Doheny Mansion, is a historic landmark nestled in the heart of Beverly Hills, California. This Tudor Revival mansion is located in Trousdale Estates and is surrounded by a beautifully landscaped estate with distinctive formal English gardens.
Designed by architect Gordon Kaufmann, the mansion and its ancillary structures were completed in 1928. The mansion was a gift from oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny to his son, Edward “Ned” Doheny Jr., and his family. The mansion spans an impressive 46,000 square feet and is situated on 16 acres of land. When it was built, it cost over $4 million, making it the most expensive home in California at the time.
The mansion’s history is not without its share of intrigue. Just four months after Ned Doheny, his wife Lucy, and their five children moved into Greystone, Ned died in a guest bedroom in a murder-suicide with his secretary, Hugh Plunkett. The mansion changed hands several times before being purchased by the City of Beverly Hills in 1965.
Today, the Greystone Mansion is a city park and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It’s open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5pm every day, offering visitors a chance to stroll through its gardens and enjoy stunning views of the city. The mansion has also found fame in Hollywood, with its descending staircase being one of the most filmed sets.

What a breathtaking experience it was! The grounds of the mansion in Beverly Hills were simply magnificent, a sight to behold. The mansion itself was a beautiful spectacle, standing grand and majestic. We had the opportunity to explore the entire area, taking in the stunning views. It was a place of wonder, rich with history that added to its charm. The best part? You could visit without any reservations, immersing yourself in the beauty of the gardens. Wandering around these gardens was like stepping into a different world. However, access to the mansion was limited to special events and certain days when it was open for tours. Nonetheless, the view of Beverly Hills from the mansion grounds was an unforgettable sight.
